SAMPLE FROM BOOK SIGNINGS: TWO DAYS IN NEW YORK

-- In the summer of 2005, HESC and APC ordered copies of The First Thirty and A Place To Sit (the workbook based on The First Thirty) for students in New York, and in August 2005, they brought Greg to New York to sign the books and speak with the students at two events.  The students and staff were wonderful! While in town, Greg also visited with Borders on Park Avenue where The First Thirty is now available.  In addition to the planned book signings, there were a number of impromptu ones -- on a plane, on a train, in a hotel, in a restaurant, in a grocery store, and literally on the side of the street among others.  Greg also had some meetings with officials from other organizations about possible future events, took a tour, and before heading home,  co-hosted (along with his friend Sanda) a dinner for forty people in Manhattan.  Here are some photos & feedback from the trip:

Bernard, 17, NY:  "The speech was very interesting.  I actually was inspired.  You know, never to settle for less than what you want in life.  It gave me a lot to look forward to after high school."

Melvin, 17, NY: "The speech [had] an impact...hearing [him] live is a bigger help for me to get to college and keep doing my best."

Yan, 16, NY: "...I got really inspired to go to college to become more educated and experience the best of learning..."

Mohammed, 16, NY:  "It's interesting how someone else's experience can help you realize [things about] the decisions you have made and will make."

Kaemanje Thomas, Author of Broken Ice, and NYSP Math & Science Instructor: "Greg is one phenomenal speaker who embodies the essence of a liberated spirit and being.  He captivated his audience, taking them to 'the heart' -- a place which we sometimes forget."

Patricia Burke, LaGuardia Community College GEAR UP:  "The event went really well...Students waited for quite some time [after the speech] to get their books signed and posed for pictures. Teachers were very, very impressed..."

Danica, 11, NY: "I think Mr. Siegman's speech was great. He asked us for our names [when he called on us during his speech] and remembered our names [when he mentioned us later during the speech].  He even added titles to some of our names [like a student named Nicholas who gave a correct answer, Mr. Siegman started referring to him as "100 Percent Right Nicholas"].  He made us feel as if we knew each other for a long time.  He made us feel welcomed. He made us feel happy.  I'm sure if many people know the story he told us or read the book, the world would be a better place."
