THE FIRST THIRTY ELEVATOR PROJECT: AFRICA

BACKGROUND:   Greg Forbes Siegman  is the real-life inspiration for The First Thirty by Jillip Naysinthe Paxson.  The book is based on the true story of the first thirty years of his life, his efforts to break down racial and cultural barriers among people of different backgrounds, his experiences as a student which influenced those efforts to make a difference, and the thirty lessons learned along the way. In 2007, The First Thirty was honored in New York as NSDLC Multicultural Relations Book of the Year. For more, see www.TheFirstThirty.com   After many events throughout the US and Canada, Greg accepted an invitation to speak in Africa in 2008. (Fittingly, the invitation was the indirect result of a chance meeting on a plane and, six months later, another chance meeting in a coffee shop.)   To see pictures and feedback from the trip, go to www.WorldsGreatestPlaces.com, click South Africa.

Some time earlier, as a result of a similar chance meeting (on an elevator) and a random act of kindness that resulted from it, The First Thirty Elevator Project was born (click Elevator Project on the Menu to read about it).

After the news began to get out that Greg was going to Africa, people began seeing to it that The First Thirty Elevator Project would spread to another continent -- ordering extra copies of The First Thirty to be given to people in Africa in conjunction with Greg's visit and/or given to people encountered on the journey along the way and back. In ordering the books, people have been sending in some incredible notes along with their orders.

Below, you will find the following:

(1) Excerpts of samples of the notes from those sponsoring The First Thirty Elevator Project

(2) Samples of who received the books in Africa

(3) Excerpts of samples of the feedback notes from those in Africa who received the books

... I was inspired by meeting Greg, listening to him speak, reading the book, noticing his proudly mismatched socks, and recognizing the significance of the lessons within his book. The lessons of 'The First Thirty' are not only relevant on a personal level, but on a global scale. In tribute...of the idea of connections and ripple effect that is at the heart of Greg's story - it is my honor to purchase [13 copies] of The First Thirty to be given to inspiring people encountered in] Africa. Cheers, Rachel, Canada

...I have not had the honor to meet Greg in person nor have I had the pleasure to check out his famous socks. And yet...I too am enamored by his passion. Greg's ability to peel the layers of humanity is something I strive to do in my life. I find myself completely intrigued by the simple yet complex message he spreads. More so, I am in awe of his ability to inspire others to achieve greatness through random acts of kindness. I mulled over the information. I realized this is not as simple as a cup of coffee. This journey Greg is about to embark on is the result of endless hours spent farming souls for compassion... Please accept 30 additional copies of Greg's books [which I am purchasing]. All I ask is that you personalize them with your message of hope and share them with young people who inspire you along your journey in Africa. - Monica, Ohio

... I was Greg's first intern [back when I was in college] and I now work at a bank. Just wanted to let you know that I am also adding a book to the pile [purchasing one copy of The First Thirty for you to give out to someone who touches your life on your journey to Africa]... Katrina

... when I first met Greg not too long ago. I was trying to find a seat at a very busy coffee shop and Greg offered me the open one at his table. I had no idea who he was and I hadn’t even read the book yet. As he worked on drawing a portrait of one of my favorite children’s poets, we talked. He told me about The First Thirty and as soon as we parted, I headed to the nearest bookstore and purchased a copy! By the next evening, I had read the amazing story. Greg’s life inspired me so deeply that I immediately sent him a note. I ordered 10 copies to give to friends and strangers (friends waiting to happen) who act with kindness. I talk about the book and the idea of reaching out and connecting to others every chance I get. Now, I am reading the book to my class of 4th graders and they all want copies – so I’m ordering a copy for each of them....[and] I can’t resist being a part of the movement and adding one to send to Africa! Peace and passion to you always, Megham

...I have not had the opportunity to meet Greg but feel as if by reading the book, I know him as well as any friend I've had for years. I'd like to participate as well by adding 2 books to the pile. I'd love to come on your journey with you and bring my 2 kids as well but because I can't, I'd like these 2 books to represent my kids, Marisa (age 12) and Trey (age 6) as their being able to voyage with you and spread all the good news about the work being done and still yet to be done. Good luck but more importantly - God bless. Donna of Delaware

We would love to help out on this!!! The Fox Valley Banking Center of Fifth Third Bank does not see this as  a group of students from Aurora [where this branch of the bank is located] going to Africa we see it as Aurora going to Africa!!  In the spirit of Aurora doing good, Fifth Third Bank would like to donate $300 dollars to the school for the purchase of copies of The First Thirty for some of the kids that are NOT going on the trip to Africa so they can experience it as well!!! Thank you so much!!!   -- Jennifer, on behalf of Fifth Third Bank Fox Valley Villages

I'm writing from Washington, D.C....I am purchasing and sending one copy of The First Thirty [to be given out to someone] in South Africa. I already have my own copy with me in Washington, D.C., which has always been a reminder of the many lessons that Greg has taught me over the years....I wish you all the best, Kris, 23, Washington, D.C.

So I woke up this morning and in the process of getting dressed for my morning walk with the dogs, something was just not right.  Could not put my finger on it until I saw one of my favorite current reads . . . The First Thirty.  Immediately I knew what was wrong . . . my socks matched!  A few seconds to take care of that problem and voila – one black sock and the other blue!  Off to explore new worlds, keeping my eyes, ears and mind open to whatever comes my way.  Just like that brick in the book, one step at a time takes you through a journey you will not soon forget.  Keep up the good work Greg!.... and put me down for 5 copies [of The First Thirty, to be given out to people you meet on your journey to Africa]. - Steve, New York

Greg, just reading these notes. Does anyone realize what a series of small, seemingly unrelated events leading up to your trek to Africa??? If your fax hadn't broken down and you hadn't asked me to receive a few faxes for you, and I hadn't waited so long to take you up on your offer of dinner to thank me, and you hadn't gotten a speaking engagement out near me, and we hadn't picked a restaurant nearby, and I hadn't left early to take care of my diabetic cat, and you hadn't decided to go to the coffee shop down the road after dinner, you never would have met the folks you did who started to talk with you because you were drawing a portrait, and they would never have had the chance to get to know you, or to tell anyone about meeting you, and those people wouldn't have seen the website and learned about what you do -- all of which led to the eventual invitation to go to Africa!!!!!!  So many little twists and turns that led you to a singular event. And it all goes back to exactly what you talk about all the time. Sometimes the smallest acts of simple kindness...can lead to some truly spectacular outcomes.. As you know, I recently ordered 5 copies of The First Thirty as part of The First Thirty Elevator Project.  I'd like one of the five copies to be included in the pile to be given out in conjunction with your trip to Africa."  - Mike

I was a productive worker at a large corporation for over eight years, but...I was unfulfilled by my work and my life seemed stagnant and ordinary.  So, I quit my job and joined the Peace Corps.  I was assigned  to Namibia in Africa.  Leaving my job, my family, and my safe secure life in the U.S. wasn't an easy choice, but I knew that there were people in greater need in other parts of the world.  During my decision making process [before joining the Peace Corps], I met Greg and I read The First Thirty.  Greg's story was inspiring!  He beat to his own rhythm and when life called he answered with gusto.  I wanted to live with the same kind of heart.  Serving in Namibia was one of the best decisions of my life.  Most certainly, add me to the list of those purchasing copies of The First Thirty for Greg to give out on the journey to Africa. I hope people will hear his story and take the lessons to heart as I did.  Sometimes little bits of encouragement are all we need to jump into something wonderful. - Karen, Florida

The staff of Walden Place Assisted Living Community (New York) would like to add one book to be given to one senior during Greg's trip to Africa.  Just as Greg learned many life lessons from his Grandma, our staff have learned from the residents in our communities that seniors are able to share a legacy of living life to its fullest with the younger generation.

I would like to purchase a copy of The First Thirty  for Greg to give out during his trip in Africa.  I want to purchase the copy personally in honor of my own grandmother (Natalie) who was a worldly traveler and was influential in teaching me how to be accepting of all types of people. She passed away two weeks ago I am headed down to her services next week. I think if Greg met her, even he would admit his own Grandma [described in The First Thirty as 'Worlds Greatest Grandma'] might have to share the title of Worlds Greatest Grandma!  My grandmother would have loved this book and she would have loved the idea of sharing Greg's story with those he meets in Africa!  - Jessica, New York

I have had the opportunity to meet Greg many times, and I am honored and inspired by his journey.  I am lucky to have him part of my life!   I am truly inspired with Greg's passion with making a difference and his approach of  making connections and the ripple effect.  I would like to purchase 5 copies of the The First Thirty for Greg to give out on his exciting journey to Africa.  I would love for others to hear his story and reflect on the lessons and continue to share his story as I have. Greg has touched my life and would love for others to have this opportunity. -- Bari

As someone who dated Greg, I know if you can get past the mismatched socks and falling asleep at dinner, you will see the real mission of his life which is to inspire people to take action.  Not too many people in day-to-day life can propel change, one person at a time. I'd like to add one book to the pile.  - Claudia

Greg’s story made me stop and think about my dreams. Then, it inspired me to take action to reach them.  It also reminded me to approach the world with kindness, courage, and a little sense of adventure because you just never know where one moment will take you.  Count me in for two copies of The First Thirty to add to the pile. -- Carin, Ohio

Please add me to the list to donate a book for Greg's upcoming Africa trip. He touches so many people's lives and brings strangers together to create a fun and unforgettable experience.  Thanks to The First Thirty, a random phone call and an invitation to dinner with strangers [when Greg was here in St. Louis to speak], I've made a life-long friend. [I hope Greg drinks] as many milkshakes as possible when he's on his trip!  - Kara, Missouri

Greg, we always said you were way ahead of your time. Your message of diversity, respect, and dealing with intolerance is universal. We’re so glad the message is now traveling to Africa, and we’re delighted to add four books to the pile.  - The Kochanny Family

Greg's story is such an inspiration - and the fact that he's been able to reach so many people in so many places, from down the hall to across the world is incredible. As another American traveling to Africa, I love that I can help reach even more people! I'm adding a book to the pile - Brett

I would like to add 5 books to the pile in order to be given out during Greg's trip through Africa.  After getting to know Greg personally, it was a real treat to read his book and connect all the dots. It's always amazed me how in his attempt to make the nice, simple everyday gestures many of us overlook, it often leads him to making an impact on a far greater scale. His story in so many ways proves how far the efforts of one person can go and I hope/know it will inspire others to help change our world for the better. - Josh W

...I hope the people of South Africa can be as touched and inspired by Greg's story as I have been...I'm adding a book.  - Evan

Hold your breath, make a wish, and count to three, come with me, take a look, read a book, What you'll see will defy explanation! If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it.  Anything you want, do it.  Want to change the world, there's nothing to it.  Greg serves to inspire the imaginative and books are the pathway to knowledge, which is why I'm contributing 5 copies to The First Thirty Elevator Project: Africa - josh m

Greg is one of the most inspiring people I have ever met and his energy and enthusiasm for contributing to society is amazing. His story is an extraordinary example of someone who perseveres despite the many doubters and naysayers he encounters through the course of his life. I hope my donation of 10 copies of "The First Thirty" allows his message to proliferate in the African continent and inspire students to persevere and overcome the obstacles in their lives.  --- Ajoy

"Recently, I met Greg at a restaurant called Crossroads.  As he explained his book and travels to Africa, I found [the restaurant's name] a bit ironic.  My name is David Westbrook. I just finished reading The First Thirty and bought 5 copies for Greg to pass onto the wonderful people he will meet on his travels in Africa  in the hope that someone will learn from the important values he shares.  I have started my own company called Golf and Game Safaris (www.golfandgamesafaris.com) to educate and promote tourism and travel between our countries which I feel enriches every ones lives from the people you meet along the way to the positive experiences you share with others. Since we've met, I've connected Greg with my brother [who still lives in South Africa and whose company will now be involved in part of Greg's trip to Africa].  This is living proof that a chance meeting can positively change or enhance peoples lives for the better.     --  David Westbrook, native of South Africa, Owner, Golf and Game Safaris

As someone who comes from a family in South Africa, I know there is incredible value in sharing the message [in The First Thirty] with those there.  I have confidence in Greg that he will make a positive change with the three books I am adding to the pile. -  David C

"I've recently had the pleasure of reconnecting with Greg after more than 15 years, and the timing couldn't have been better...His open and honest stories remind us that no act of kindness is ever wasted.  Even small efforts can make a positive difference in the lives of other people - and it's fun to connect the dots!  I happily add a book - a small effort - knowing it will continue to spread this message to people in Africa.  Greg's Favorite Ex-girlfriend, Heather, New York

Thanks to Greg for letting us be part of this amazing journey he is on -- uniting countries across the world.  It is truly an honor to have him as a Jamba Juice customer!...." - Norah, Jamba Juice  Chicago

(2) BOOK DISTRIBUTION

The books were distributed in two ways:

== Greg was in Africa to serve as American Scholar in Residence for a US-based volunteer program.  There were 35 or so students and adults in the program.  Each of the attendees were provided with a copy of the book, to give to someone who impacted their experience in Africa and/or who they witnessed commit acts of kindness for others.

== Greg personally gave out the rest to people who impacted his experience and/or committed acts of kindness for others.

In each instance, Greg and/or one of the program members (depending who gave out the book) filled out a form indicating when, where, why, and to whom they gave the book.  Here are excerpts from some examples:

Henry (student member of the program):  "I chose to give the book to Christophe.  He is an 8th grade math teacher.  He was about 21 years old.  He lived in South Africa almost his whole life and loves rugby.  I ate some lunch wit hhim and saw the impact that he had on the lives of the children in his community.  He was a father-like figure to all of the students...As soon as he entered the room where the assembly was being held, he received a standing ovation!  He's a positive influence in many of the children's lives."

Brittney (student member of the program):  "I chose to give the book to Ugan.  He is 16.  He plays sports.  He's in school...I chose to give him the book because he is a really nice boy with a bright smile and future."

Casey (student member of the program):  "I chose to give the book to Tara.  He is 21 years old.  He's a [university] student, and he is a teacher-in-training.  His subject is math.  He went with us on our first tour of [the townships].  We met because I began asking him questions about the community.  I chose to give him the book because, like myself, he is a university student studying to become a teacher.  He was kind enough to explain to me what it would be like to be studying to teach on another side of the world."

Jim (adult member of the program): "I chose to give the book to Xolile.  He is a staff member at an outreach program for teens.  We talked during our visit.  He runs support groups focusing on topics of interest to teens.  I chose to give him the book because he has helped the outreach grow from 4 kids to 34 kids.  He gives so much of himself to others."

Valerie (adult member of the program): "I chose to give the book to Elizabeth.  She is a teacher of 4th graders in a township...She has taught for 15 years. She has two [teen-aged children].  I met her while walking through the park with Greg.  I chose to give her this book because she made me feel comfortable speaking to those I don't know, and her reason for teaching was exuberant."

Greg: "I chose to give a copy of the book to Brian.  He is a 'Service Ambassador' at a hotel. (In America, we might describe him as the Front Doorman).  He has, by his own description, worked there "since time immemorial."  He was among those present when the students in the program sang for the hotel staff.  I was touched by the fact that he spoke spontaneously with the group after they sang and shared his thoughts with them about what it meant to him and his colleagues to hear American students singing in his language.  I spoke with him afterwards and in the days that followed.  He is a man filled with knowledge, who has literally lived history, and he has an incredibly kind spirit.  He endured much during apartheid, but he continues to believe in and look for the good side within all people, no matter what they look like.  He was kind enough to share some of his knowledge and stories with me when we spoke."

Greg:  "I chose to give a copy of the book to Lelethu.  One evening, I wandered around town and came across a movie theater.  I started speaking with some members of the staff.  Lelethu was there as well - as she is one of their daughters.  She is an incredibly polite child.  She is 11 years old, she loves to read and says she is always happy if she can get her hands on another book."

Greg: "I chose to give a copy of the book to Carly.  I met her and her friends on the boat that takes people to and from Robben Island.  She is an American, who was in Africa with her friends -- choosing to spend part of their summer on a service mission halfway around the world.  I chose to give her the book because she and her friends were very nice and offered up a seat, and because I think it's great that they were choosing to use their time to be part of a service program."

Greg: "I chose to give a copy of the book to Yanga.  He is a student at one of the schools we visited.  He is 15 years old.  He is interested in being an accountant one day.  I chose to give him the book for three reaons:  (1) He did a small good deed without being asked [picking up a bag that was on the ground], (2) He was very polite to me and his classmates who were also there, (3) He asked tons of great questions.  And I believe in my heart that if he wants to be an accountant (or anything else in life), one of the biggest keys to succeeding is curiosity - asking question after questions after question when people cross your path."

(3) Excerpts of samples of the feedback notes from those in Africa who received the books

"...my daughter [was presented] with a copy of The First Thirty...I've made it a point to read it myself...I want to extend my appreciation for the book and hope that it will do some good [with my daughter] and also teach her some values.  I pray for her in church and everywhere else that I go and always try to teach her good and the bad about life. Thank you again." - Nomonde

"If we can only have The First Thirty prescribed as a compulsory reading matter for [every] 12 year old in [South Africa], it will make a world of difference...this book has taken me way back to my own childhood...it is an extremely interesting book, especially how a young boy had the guts to break away from the norm..."  - Yasien Mohamed, Robben Island Museum guide (and former Secretary, Pan-African Congress)

"....I could not put it down. I finished it early this morning and wanted to thank you for such an inspirational piece of literature. I think a lot of people can identify with Greg's struggles and take note that anything can be achieved if you set your mind to it and to hold on to your dreams. One person can make a difference. It is a fantastic message that our country sorely needs right now. It has definitely inspired me to make some changes in my life and to take some risks..."  - Sannet

"...The First Thirty has given me much food for thought and I am quite sure will resonate with me in the years to come. Today is Youth Day in South Africa which recognises the contribution that young people have made in the struggle against apartheid and the rebuilding of our country after apartheid. It is also meant to inspire young people to take on their own potential and to find their way in the world. The First Thirty shows how that is possible ...Thank you so much for sharing this story..." - Richard Freedman. National Director, South African Holocaust Foundation

"Lawrence is busy reading The First Thirty and so far finds it most interesting, the little sayings are amazing!!! Well done!" -  Lisa and Lawrence
