The First Thirty by Jillip Naysinthe Paxson (and expanded version, The Silhouette Man)

The First Thirty was honored as Northeast Student Diversity Leadership Conference 2007 Multicultural Relations Book of the Year

The books tell the story of a person's efforts to connect the dots between the world inside his head and the world outside his window, the experiences that shape those efforts, and the lessons learned from the people and places encountered along the way.  It is a story about turning ideas into action -- and making a difference in the world around you.

On a broader level, it is a story that covers topics like:   the arts, athletics, embracing rejection, celebrating creativity, chasing dreams, working hard, books and films, grade school, middle school, high school, summer camp, choosing a college (and making the most of your time there), starting a business (and sustaining it), using food (and milkshakes) and sport as common ground to bring people together, overcoming obstacles, addressing intolerance, shattering stereotypes, starting small, thinking big, navigating your way through the nonprofit sector, giving back, connecting dots, balancing work and community, understanding the impact of the ripple effect...and always listening to your Grandma.
